COVID-19 VACCINE & MAMMOGRAMS

Should you delay your annual screening?

With the onset of the public now receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, please note, it is important to advise your Imaging Centre if you have received the vaccine, date received and in which arm before attending your pre scheduled mammogram / ultrasound or when making your appointment. This will assist with rescheduling or to further navigate a call back for additional imaging.

The most common COVID-19 vaccine side effects aren’t particularly surprising: arm pain, fatigue, maybe a mild fever. But experts want the public to be aware that one lesser-known side effect of the vaccines might cause symptoms that are similar to warning signs of breast cancer.

A small number of people have developed lymphadenopathy (meaning swollen or tender lymph nodes) in their armpit within a few days of receiving the vaccine on the same side of the body where the dose was administered. The swelling may continue for 1-2 weeks prior to the vaccination.

The Society for Breast Imaging recommend having your screening mammogram or follow-up ultrasound before your vaccine or delaying your screening for 6 weeks post your vaccination.
